Noiseproofing Compound

Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound is a unique damping product that will address your soundproofing needs and lead to a quieter life.

Noiseproofing Compound

As the most cost-effective soundproofing material on the market, Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound has unique properties that work to dissipate the vibrations caused by sound waves as they travel through ceilings, walls and floors. Very simply, when used between two rigid layers of material, typically drywall, the Compound works to reduce the noise traveling from one room to the other. Unlike other soundproofing products, our Compound is ideal for reducing low frequency noise common with home entertainment and theater systems.

Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound has a unique polymeric formula that converts mechanical energy from sound waves into heat. When sandwiched between two rigid layers of material, it forms a damping system. The results can be dramatic: just one layer of Compound between two sheets of drywall can significantly decrease the amount of noise passing from room to room, across all frequencies.

Whether incorporated into a new build, used over existing drywall in a renovation or spec’d into a commercial construction project, the Compound can be leveraged to create a soothing environment for those in need of a quiet space. Regardless of the project, significant reduction of sound is well within reach both in effort and cost, and doable for DIYers, contractors and builders alike.

Material and installation considerations

Despite the Green Glue brand name, our Noiseproofing Compound is not a permanent adhesive and screw fasteners are still necessary. Use of the Compound can improve the sound transmission class (STC) rating by up to 12 points when sandwiched between a single additional layer of drywall and the first layer. Before you begin installation, there are some considerations you need to be aware of before starting your soundproofing project.

The Compound is designed to be used between two layers of standard building materials such as drywall, OSB, MDF, cement board, or plywood measuring at least 1/2 in (12 mm) thick. When working with Compound, avoid using the following materials:

  • Sheet materials less than ½ in (12 mm) thick

  • Wainscoting

  • Any type of sheet insulation

  • Fabric

  • Cork, plastics, copper, bronze, zinc, MLV (Mass Loaded Vinyl), flexible or plasticized materials

  • Flexible, low surface energy, or non-stick materials

To apply the Compound tubes, you will need a standard 32-oz caulking gun, or if using the 5-gallon pail you may purchase a pail applicator tool from one of our many Green Glue Soundproofing Specialists. You can get creative when applying to drywall, so long as you apply material across the entire surface area. The general recommendation is to apply in a random pattern all over the board, leaving a 2-3 in (5-7.5 cm) border around the outside of the panel to allow for handling. For sufficient coverage, we estimate a ratio of about two tubes per 4 x 8 ft (3 m²) sheet.

Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound tubes

How much Compound do I need for my project?

A case of Compound contains 12 tubes covering about 192 sq. ft. at the recommended 2 tubes per 4 x 8 ft (3 m²) sheet coverage. Each 5-gallon pail of Compound covers approximately 365 sq. ft. (33.9 m²), or approximately 22 tubes worth of product.

Do I have to apply the Compound in a specific pattern?

No! Get creative in your application just remember the general recommendation is to apply in a random pattern all over the board, leaving a 2-3 in (5-7.5 cm) border around the outside of the panel to allow for handling. The recommended amount is to use two tubes are used per 4 x 8 ft sheet (3 m²).

Can I use the Compound as a sealant in gaps and cracks?

No, the Compound should not be used to fill any gaps or cavities, such as inside a wall for insulating purposes.

Installation in 3 Easy Steps

Step 1

Cut a ¼ in (6.35 mm) hole in the tip of the tube with a utility knife, screw nozzle tightly over the tip of the tube and cut a ¼ in (6.35 mm) hole in the tip of the nozzle before placing the tube in a standard caulk gun.

Step 2

Apply Compound to the back of the second layer of drywall by pulling the trigger to dispense the product from the tube. No specific pattern necessary!

Step 3

Within 15 minutes of applying, fasten the panel with screws through the first layer of drywall to the framing, following local building codes. Leave a ¼ in (6.35 mm) gap along the top and bottom of the wall to allow for sealing.

Benefits of soundproofing with our Compound

Significantly reduce sound transfer

Once drywall is hung, the viscoelastic damping compound will begin curing and will reach peak performance within 30 days, increasing the STC rating up to 16 points and significantly reducing sound transfer between two spaces.

Isolation across all frequencies

Compound works to reduce both mid- and low frequency noises, improving your quality of life within your home.

Environmentally conscience

Committed to the values of sustainability and environmental stewardship in our manufacturing practices, the Compound tubes are made from 100% recycled materials which can contribute towards LEED credits as environmentally preferred products.

Fast, simple and effective installation

No measuring or troweling necessary, our Compound dispenses with very little effort and can be installed in just 3 easy steps.

Non-toxic material

We put indoor air quality at the center of this product innovation, making the use of non-toxic and low-VOC materials a no brainer.
