Green Glue Noiseproofing Clips mechanically separate two sides of a wall so that when sound hits one side of the wall, the clips absorb the vibration and less sound reaches the other side of the wall. Used in conjunction with hat channel and in place of other mechanically decoupling products like resilient channel, the design of our Green Glue Noiseproofing Clips features a fortified design that reduces noise transfer and eliminates the possibility of “short circuiting” — when a screw hits a stud, and effectively reconnects the decoupled wall to back to the wall system.

Soundproofing starts with the base wall, as having a cavity filled with flexible insulation is the starting point for any soundproofing project. The addition of Clips targets impact noise, reducing sound from noises like footfall and bouncing balls. Clips are best used in new construction projects to avoid the “triple leaf effect” which occurs when clips and drywall are installed over existing drywall. However, if you are adding Clips to a remodel project be sure to remove all existing drywall so Clips are secured directly to the stud.

We offer two Clip configurations to best suit your soundproofing project size: a single part clip (also known as a Whisper Clip RC or Architectural Clip) and a two-part clip (also known as a Whisper Clip or Noiseproofing Clip). The single part clip is best for large scale projects where finding an economical solution is paramount, though their use often requires more upfront work in planning. The two-part clip will deliver slightly better performance and is meant for smaller projects where maximum sound reduction is key and reaching economies of scale is not needed.

Noiseproofing Clips installation considerations

Installation is simple to follow, requiring only a drill and measuring tape and should only take a few hours for an average room. Begin by screwing Clips into wall studs; the hat channel is then snapped into the clips and drywall is screwed into the channel. A general rule of thumb is to install 1 Clip for every 5 sq. ft (1.5 sq. m). The two-part clip allows you to first attach to the hat channel and install to the wall studs, whereas the single clip must be installed to wall studs before attaching the hat channel (this can be done using a chalk line to ensure alignment).

Some details to keep in mind when installing Green Glue Noiseproofing Clips:

  • Clips cannot be installed to existing drywall on a wall or ceiling, as this will create a “triple leaf effect” and eliminate any benefits the clips could provide

  • Secure Clips directly to the wall studs, type of screw depends on wall stud:

    • Wood: Use #8 × 1–5/8 in (4.2 cm) or longer, coarse thread screws

    • Steel: Use #8 × 1–¼ in (3.175 cm) or longer, type S self-tapping screws

    • Concrete: Use 3/16 in dia × 2–¼ in (.476 cm dia x 5.7 cm), tapcon or equal anchor screw

  • Space no further than 48 in (1.2 m) apart horizontally

  • Hat channel must not be spaced more than 24 in (60 cm) vertically

  • Bottom Clips must be less than 3 in (7.6 cm) from the floor

  • Top Clips must be less than 6 in (15.2 cm) from the ceiling

  • Must be placed at the outermost studs on every piece of hat channel

  • Doesn't require specific temperature range for installation
